The Rise of the Zero-Click Search
Apparently, the era of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is over. In the past, websites competed with one another to be found by Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Google, with more than 90% of the searches, was the dominant player in the field. However, in the last year, Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms like Claude, Gemini, and others are beginning to take over the search market in terms of making recommendations to consumers so that they don’t have to search through the highlighted links themselves. This has had several effects: First, the amount of web traffic has declined considerably as the “zero click search” has grown as a preference. Secondly, these AI platforms look for different things than the Search Engines did, and so the firms and products being recommended have often changed dramatically. For this reason, it is useful for any business to occasionally check what the various AI platforms are saying and so recently I asked Claude: “What is the best architectural firm in Newport RI and why?” Here was its unedited response (with its suggested references in parentheses):
